UWRF Celebrates 150 Years
Morgan described her role at UWRF by saying that her work focuses on keeping the archives for the university.  Kellie started the historical review with some local western Wisconsin history, noting the founding of Prescott in1839, Hudson in 1840, and River Falls in 1848 when Wisconsin became a state.    Around 1870, River Falls had a population of around 700.  The community started advocating for a normal school in 1867.  The purpose of normal schools was to “normalize” teacher education.  Through subsequent years, bonds were issued and plans accepted in 1874.   The first formal dedication was in September of 1875.  River Falls was Wisconsin’s fourth normal school.

Building Beds for Kids Who Need Them
Steve Kaste is a retired Lutheran pastor who moved to River Falls about 10 years ago.  He said that Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a new passion for him.  Recently he got a call from his sister about an event in Menomonie; the event was an “assembly line” making beds, and she knew that Steve likes “making stuff”.  The leader of that event was looking for someone in St Croix County to form and lead a group in this area to build beds for people who need them.  Steve said that in most communities, 2-3% of children do not have a proper bed.  Click READ MORE  for the full story.

Exchange Students Presentations
At Tuesday's morning meeting we heard from our recently arrived inbound exchange student Abril Feste Fugil and from  Adler Howe, who has returned to River Falls after a full year as an exchange student in Czechia, a/k/a the Czech Republic. Abril provided a very good presentation about her character, her family, her friends and hobbies in Spain, and about her town and the region of Catalonia, where she and her family live. She told us about her goals for her year in the US.  Her year thus far has included Homecoming as well as playing on the high school's tennis team.

Adler had the unusual experience of living not only with multiple families but in two different places.  He started in a small town with one family, then moved into Prague with his second host family.  Adler told us about what each place was like, and he shared some highlights of the year, including a ski trip and a "Euro trip" to see some of the major cities and sights in Europe.  He shared that the group he skied with had to travel to Slovakia to find snow.  Just like Wisconsin, Czechia this last year had an unusually mile winter.  In response to a question, Adler said that he managed to pick up a fair amount of the difficult language in Czechia.  It sounded like he was "pretty good at picking up the Czech".
Falcon Links: Fostering Success at UWRF
Tammy Kincaid began her presentation with a history of Falcon Links.  She was in foster care as a young woman, which helped guide her to this role, and she was part of the founding of Falcon Links.  Tammy noted that a very low percentage (about 3%) of young people coming out of foster care and other challenging family situations go to college, and between 3-10% of them graduate. Click Read More for additional information including interesting facts and statistics.
