School Forest Management Plan Project and Forest Restoration Course: Professor Kevyn Juneau's class at UWRF did a project where 3 teams did on-site research at the River Falls School Forest. Your Tidings editor was at the School Forest Steering Committee meeting where the 3 teams presented, and Lydia's team was outstanding. She told us about the project, showed her teams plan, process, analysis and recommendations. She also talked about what the teams learned from the process, and how it can be used in the future. For Dr. Juneau’s Forest Restoration and Management course, she led a team creating a management plan for the school district’s school forest with a group of classmates. It was a semester-long project that involved three visits to the school forest for data collection, research at the university archives, and a presentation to the school forest committee. Through the course, I gained experience measuring trees, modeling treatment prescriptions, using historical records, and formulating restoration objectives. About Lydia Degross: Lydia will be a senior at UW - River Falls majoring in conservation. She chose the ecological restoration option within the conservation program, and she is also pursuing the GIS certificate. She transferred to UWRF last year after earning an Associate of Arts at Inver Hills Community College. She chose to study conservation because she believes conserving our natural resources and wonders is critical, and she enjoys hands-on restoration work.
What Lydia says about herself: Before coming to River Falls, I lived all of my life in South Minneapolis. I am involved in the Resource Management Club, Student Government, and Street Level Ministries. I am a new member of Ezekiel Lutheran. This summer, I am living in River Falls, and I am doing an internship through the university’s Ecological Restoration Institute and the Kinni River Land Trust. For the position, I have had the opportunity to do trail maintenance, invasive species removal, woody species control, and plant surveying at the UWRF and KRLT sites.
